St.George’s church,
Shimpling, Suffolk
Since 1990, AuraVisions has been repairing stained glass windows in churches and cathedrals.
Services range from basic repairs and cleaning to completely releading and replacing damaged
stained glass. Their church window restoration specialists have extensive experience repairing
ancient and medieval glass. We're committed to delivering high-quality workmanship and offer
various services, including fitting leaded light windows in churches. Here they detail work on St.
Georges’s Church.
This East Chancel window was very distorted throughout.
It was made by William Warrington in 1842 and was one
of his earliest before becoming well known and is an
important window in his portfolio.
This glass was also used to replace 36 painted quarries in
panel 3c (see images). The lion motif of St.Mark had also
sustained some damage, losing one of its wings and a
section of blue glass above its head.
All the quarried background is of a painted oak leaf
pattern with the motifs of the Apostles, Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John, spread across the main lights and the
dedication plaque to Thomas Hallifax at the centre.
In order to restore this panel back to its originally
intended appearance, we replaced all these with glass and
paint work to match the original style and colouring.
We releaded all the main and tracery glazing in
conjunction with the stonemasons’ repairs, repairing and
replacing many of the painted borders, diamond quarries
and pieces within the Apostle motifs.
Due to some historic stone movement, the glazing had
been removed for releading and etched glass had been
used to replace the borders to accommodate the new
varying widths.
