Welcome to issue 47 of Conservation and Heritage Journal
In this issue we have a variety of articles highlighting the best projects that conservation and heritage artisans
have worked on. We are proud to feature The National Gallery - Three decades of facilitating evolution.
For over 30 years, Purcell has supported the National Gallery through a series of sensitive and ambitious
projects. This longstanding partnership has helped the world-renowned institution to adapt, grow and
welcome millions of visitors while safeguarding its rich architectural legacy.
Conservation work is featured with Towneley Hall, a distinguished Grade I listed historic house situated just
south of Burnley in Lancashire. The hall has been the focus of a major conservation and restoration initiative
aimed at preserving its architectural and cultural legacy. Whilst The Chroma Conservation team were
delighted to be commissioned to work on the conservation cleaning and retouching treatment of the Rex
Whistler murals at Trent Park House. Painted between 1930-1933, in the Long Saloon (Library and Chinese
Drawing Room) and the Blue Room in this most interesting of houses in Cockfosters, North London.
Also featured is Sheerness Dockyard Church which has been resurrected as a new community hub for
local people on the Isle of Sheppey. The £9.5m project has been completed by the Sheerness Dockyard
Preservation Trust.
As part of the 21st Century Renaissance Project at Castle Howard, Heritage Lighting Matters were asked
to sustainably upgrade the picture lighting in the Long Gallery. This project covered many specialist skill
sets to cover all aspects of the room, from gilding to curtains and electrical wiring to architectural joinery.
All areas of renovation & restoration were expertly carried out on time to re-open at the end of April.
Hare & Humphreys is one of Britain’s leading exponents of the art of painting, gilding, conservation and
decoration of historic and contemporary buildings - delivering a wide range of expertise both nationally and
internationally. Their dedicated team has been proud to deliver a variety of decorative and restoration works
at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Soho Square.
We feature a wide range of glass projects including; the benefits of using frameless structural glass when you
create additional space in a heritage building by Ion Glass.
Shaping Light, Preserving Time, the Rooflight Co craft rooflights for period architecture. The Rooflight Co
has a deep understanding of these requirements and have spent more than three decades refining their
delicate craft to achieve the balance of authenticity and modern performance.
Whilst Paul Trace, Director of Stella Rooflight explains why British-made rooflights are more critical than
ever. Also of interest is Mark Styles, Managing Director of Thomann-Hanry®, who offers an expert opinion
on the different methods of cleaning the facades of historic and listed buildings.
