Project overview
CE+CA’s work on Petronella House breathes new life
into a substantial Victorian villa in Sheffield, blurring the
boundaries between existing and new additions as an exemplar of conservation, restoration and refurbishment.
The home is set within a conservation area, and whilst
new additions are unashamedly contemporary, alterations
seamlessly work with the language of the original
architecture.
The client was passionate about the building and wanted
the house to “re-emerge from years of under-appreciation”. CE+CA, the client and contractor worked closely
together to create a unique home fit for modern family
living. Petronella House also re-envisioned the wider
landscape and restoration of a derelict coach house into
ancillary accommodation. Overall, the transformation of
the site is radical, yet somehow feels as if it has always
been this way.
The project won the Interior Project Award and Medium
Project Award at the Sheffield Design Awards 2024 and
is on the RIBA Yorkshire Awards 2025 Shortlist.
Architecture and interiors
The house had undergone a major refurbishment in the
1970s. Many of those changes were of their time and
deeply unsympathetic to the character of the original Victorian building. The ambition for the architecture and interiors was about creating a cohesive feel whilst giving
spaces distinct identities. The family welcomed a contemporary design language which would take its cues from
the existing identity of the historic home. CE+CA
worked closely with our client to develop an intricately
detailed project that has been brought to life by a talented
team of craftspeople.
We made a single radical intervention at each level of the
house. At ground floor, the old glass house has been replaced with a large kitchen and dining room. The architecture of this space is overtly contemporary and turns
the main axis of the house towards the garden and previously underutilised rear courtyard. The space is contained
by a multifaceted copper clad shell that picks up on the
colours and hues of the adjacent copper beech tree. The
