industries also use cork separators, cork granules and powder, polishing discs, and refractory bricks. To avoid tiresome listing the various uses, suffice it to mention that
cork is also used in construction, the refrigeration industry,
automotive and aeronautical accessories, the chemical
and pharmaceutical industries, the footwear industry,
printing, and the manufacture of sporting goods.
What benefits does cork use bring?
The exploitation of cork produces very important environmental and social benefits that must be taken into account.
To begin with, the economy and lifestyles created around
cork represent one of the most important reasons to conserve and protect cork oak forests. These forests and pastures are distributed in only seven countries in the western
Mediterranean and maintain extraordinary biological diversity. In an area of cork oak forest equivalent to onefifth of a football field, up to 135 different plant species
have been found. Furthermore, these forests provide shelter to some of the most emblematic and endangered animal species of Mediterranean ecosystems, such as the
imperial eagle and other diurnal and nocturnal birds of
prey, the stork, the Iberian lynx, the mongoose, the
chameleon, the genet, and the Barbary deer (the only
African deer). Furthermore, millions of migratory birds
winter here.
