An industry game changer, the
AirDrain, a permanent passive
replacement for the French drain
Threat to buildings from climate change
Damp and cold bridging are often invisible enemies in
older homes. Raised ground levels, poor ventilation, and the
absence of good detailing to avoid water ingress, can lead
to persistent moisture problems. These problems can result
in mould, rot to embedded timbers, poor indoor air quality,
and structural problems. Climate change is worsening,
according to the Building Research Establishment and storm
rainfall has increased by 50 - 200% since the 1960’s. Walls
can now be subjected to as much as 100 litres of water per
square metre during extreme weather events. But the moisture
doesn’t just saturate the walls, it soaks into the ground beneath
the property. This saturation, known as increased moisture
loading, means that saturated soil not only affects the ground
but also any ground floor voids, and results in increased
thermal loss. Even homes with damp proof courses are at risk
when ground levels are high, or where drainage fails. Many
properties have never had a drain survey carried out. The
AirDrain was designed specifically to overcome these issues,
which have been seen time and again on surveys. It works
with the structure, not against it, to deliver a simple, versatile
and long-term solution that is noninvasive
