Fabric repairs were undertaken in accordance with
conservation best practice, retaining as much of the
original fabric as possible, and limiting interventions to
only those which are necessary carried out with traditional
skills, in order to maximise retention and re-use of
materials. Re-roofing in Welsh slate was combined with
the introduction of roof insulation to reduce heat loss. The
installation of efficient low temperature heating systems,
introduction of draught lobbies and provision of low
energy lighting, all contribute to the overall ambition to
reduce the carbon footprint of the church in line with the
Church of England’s net zero 2030 target.
St. Mary’s Walthamstow describes itself as ‘a church for the
whole community’. This restored, enhanced, and extended
church is now able to creatively blur the boundaries
between this established faith setting and the diverse and
vibrant community which it serves.
